Entering into Autumn, pandemic considered

We are a couple of weeks into a new season; I hope everyone is finding peace and smooth transitions. A change of season’s weather fluctuations can jolt to our bodies and—especially when it’s summer we’re putting to bed—leave us saddened as we long for warmer, lighter days.

No doubt, this wasn’t the typical Milwaukee summer for many of us given we’re still moving through a global pandemic. My summer was spent much closer to home and without mass gatherings of friends to share food and music. We spent a lot more time outdoors on uncrowded lakes and beaches and with a much smaller group of close peeps. The summer bucket lists were shorter and less ambitious, but we fared well as we dialed back the schedule, experienced less rush, and embraced what was. My daughter and I have bonded greatly during the last 6 months and that made for an epic COVID Summer 2020. It was definitely one for the books, mostly in positive ways.

Some of our summer bright spots reflected new habits or routines we’ve developed since lockdown in the spring. Taking daily morning walks with coffee to the peek at Lake Michigan, taking daily evenings walks around the park, and spending more time in the yard and garden all infused our summer days. Our new rituals that brought us joy the moment we put our feet on the floor each morning.

As the weather turns colder, another chapter of this pandemic is upon us as outdoor access at cafes, restaurants, and others venues becomes more limited. I am an all-weather walker, runner, and foot commuter so I am not concerned about getting out to move each day, but I do think about many others who are dependent on the outdoors for activity and socializing right now. As we’ve seen with businesses, schools, and general family life during this time, creativity is key.

What routines have you solidified since the pandemic started that you plan to continue as the temperatures chill? What will you do this winter to stay active, healthy, and connected?

I am grateful that my work allows me to bring movement and breathing exercises to many in our community. I will continue to teach online and in-person (with new COVID-19 rules) and am here with ideas as you explore cold-weather wellness plans. Let me know how I can help. Be well, my friends. Namaste.
